Custom Bag MOQ Explained
MOQ = Minimum Order Quantity. For custom bags, 500 pieces is the industry standard. Here's why — and how to work with it.
Why 500?
- Material minimums: Fabric suppliers sell by the roll (50-100 yards). One roll may only cover 200-300 bags. Ordering partial rolls means waste.
- Setup costs: Cutting dies, printing screens, and sewing line setup cost the same whether you make 100 or 1,000 bags.
- Production line economics: A sewing line needs 2-3 hours to "ramp up" on a new design. Spreading that cost across 100 units vs. 500 units makes a 5x difference in per-unit labor cost.
Strategies for Lower MOQs
- Use stock materials instead of custom-dyed fabrics → 300 pcs
- Choose ODM designs with existing tooling → 300-500 pcs
- Combine orders: Multiple SKUs sharing materials = lower effective MOQ per SKU
- Sample run first: 50-100 pcs at higher unit cost to test the market
